Transfer a project to another account (Handover)
How to hand over a full site to another account or client, what travels with the project, and what happens to the domain and Stripe.
On this page
- When to use site transfer (Settings → Transfer site), such as handing a site over to a client
- What travels with the transfer (pages, design, CMS, offers, contacts, history) and what happens to the domain and Stripe account
- How the handover flow works (Project Handover) and how the new owner accepts the site from their email or notification
If you’re a designer or agency, or you built a site for a partner or client under your own account, sooner or later you’ll want to hand it over so they become the Owner, connect their own bank in Stripe, and run their business independently. That’s what site transfer is for.
When to use site transfer (Settings → Transfer site), such as handing a site over to a client
The difference between inviting someone to your team and transferring the site comes down to who remains the legal and operational owner of the project:
- If you only want your client to review progress or edit text while you remain the project owner, invite them in Team with the role of your choice.
- If you’ve finished building the site and want to hand over full ownership so it stops counting toward your account’s projects and moves to theirs, go to Settings → Transfer site (this section is only visible to the current project Owner).
What travels with the transfer (pages, design, CMS, offers, contacts, history) and what happens to the domain and Stripe account
When you transfer a project, the entire site moves to the new owner’s account so they don’t have to rebuild a thing:
| Project area | What happens during the transfer |
|---|---|
| Pages, design, and site images | Transferred in full with all sections, brand styles, and files used in the project. |
| Blog and Collections (CMS) | All collections, blog posts, and items travel along with their URLs and SEO settings. |
| Catalogue, contacts, forms, and bookings | Created offers, the contact list, received form messages, sales history, and upcoming booked appointments are all preserved. |
| Site domain | The .veltica.com subdomain and any custom domain connected to the project move with the site so it stays online without interruption. |
| Stripe account (Payments) | Disconnected automatically for security. A Stripe account belongs to the person or company that originally linked it and is never handed over to a third party. Offers pause online checkout until the new owner connects their own Stripe account. |
| Business tax details | Travel with the project so published legal policies don’t break, and the new owner gets an immediate prompt to replace them with their own trading name, tax ID (RFC/NIF/EIN), and address. |
How the handover flow works (Project Handover) and how the new owner accepts the site from their email or notification
The transfer takes place in two safe steps so a site never changes hands by mistake:
- Send the transfer invitation: in Settings → Transfer site, enter the email address of the person receiving the site. Until they accept, the project remains yours and you can cancel the request if you typed the wrong address.
- The recipient reviews the inventory before accepting: the recipient gets an email and a notification in their dashboard bell (“Someone wants to transfer [Project name] to you”). Opening it shows a live preview of the site and an exact breakdown of Content included (how many pages, collections, contacts, form messages, images, products and services, sales, upcoming bookings, and which domain it carries).
- Account and plan check:
- Just like team invitations, only the account whose email matches the invitation can accept it.
- If the incoming site goes past the limits of the recipient’s current plan (for example, it has 15 pages and the recipient is on the free plan), the screen explains this clearly: they can click Accept the site without anything being deleted and choose a plan that fits afterward.
- Post-acceptance checklist (
Handover Notice): as soon as the new owner clicks Accept the site, the project moves to their account and opens a welcome review (“One thing is missing for it to be fully yours”) with two direct actions:- Connect payments: to link their own Stripe account under Settings → Stripe and resume charging for offers on sale.
- Check the details: to open Settings → Business information and put their own business name, tax ID, and address on the site’s privacy policy and terms.
